Why did he not sign the Declaration of Independence?

  • He was absent

  • He opposed it

  • He wasn't there

  • He didn't agree with the wording

Answer

While he was one of the first to suggest the idea of independence, John Dickinson was the only one of the delegates from the Pennsylvania delegation to oppose signing the Declaration of Independence. He opposed it because he believed that the colonies were not yet ready to go to war with Great Britain and that they should first try to negotiate a settlement.
