HMS Terror was the ship on which John Irving served. Irving was a British Royal Navy officer who participated in the Franklin Expedition, a British voyage of Arctic exploration that ended in disaster. The expedition, led by Sir John Franklin, set out in 1845 with two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. The ships became trapped in ice in the Canadian Arctic and were abandoned in 1848.
