John Napier, the Scottish mathematician and inventor of logarithms, died on 4 April 1617. He was born in Merchiston Castle, Edinburgh, on 1 January 1550. Napier was a brilliant mathematician and scientist, and his work on logarithms was a major breakthrough in mathematics. He also invented the Napier bones, a calculating device that was used before the invention of the slide rule.
