John Paul II was the first Polish Pope. Before him, all Popes had been from Italy or from Italian families. John Paul II was born in Wadowice, Poland, in 1920. He was ordained a priest in 1946 and served as a bishop and archbishop before being elected Pope in 1978. He served as Pope until his death in 2005.
