On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., during a performance of the play Our American Cousin. Booth shot Lincoln in the head at close range, and the President died the next morning. Booth was a Confederate sympathizer who was angry about the Union victory in the American Civil War. He was captured and killed several days after the assassination.
