Pope John XIX succeeded Pope Benedict VIII as the bishop of Rome in 1024. Benedict VIII had been elected in 1012 and had a tumultuous reign that was marked by conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II. John XIX was elected with the support of the emperor and went on to rule for a relatively peaceful seven years. He died in 1032 and was succeeded by Pope Benedict IX.
