Answer
John I was the title given to John Zápolya as King of Hungary and Croatia from 1526 to 1540. He claimed the throne after the Battle of Mohács, where the Hungarian king Louis II was killed. Zápolya's reign was marked by conflict with the Habsburg dynasty, who also claimed the Hungarian throne. He was eventually deposed by Ferdinand I of Habsburg in 1540.
