John Zápolya was born in 1487. He was a Hungarian nobleman who became the Prince of Transylvania in 1510 and the King of Hungary in 1526. Zápolya was a rival of Ferdinand I of Habsburg, who was also elected King of Hungary in 1526. The two kings fought a civil war for the Hungarian throne, which lasted until Zápolya's death in 1540.
