Borrell's political career began in the 1970s, during Spain's transition to democracy following the death of General Francisco Franco. He was a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and held various positions in regional and national government, including serving as President of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2007. In 2019, he was appointed as the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
