Answer
Joseph Banks brought back just over 30,000 plant specimens from his voyage on the Endeavour with James Cook in 1768-71. This included many new species of plants, and some that were previously unknown to Europeans. Banks' collection helped to establish the foundations of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, and many of the plants he brought back are still on display there today.
