Joseph Kabila was born on the 4th June 1971 in Hewa Bora, South Kivu Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He is the son of Laurent-Désiré Kabila, who led the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire (AFDL) in a successful rebellion against the government of Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997. Following his father's assassination in 2001, Joseph Kabila became President of the DRC.
