Joseph of Anchieta died on 9 June 1597, after spending most of his life in the Americas as a Catholic missionary. Anchieta was born in Portugal in 1534 and joined the Society of Jesus in 1551. He was sent to Brazil in 1553 and spent the rest of his life there, working to convert the indigenous people to Catholicism.
