Three exploratory expeditions were conducted in Africa by Speke. His first journey, from 1856 to 1858, was with Richard Francis Burton, during which they discovered Lake Tanganyika. Speke's second journey, undertaken from 1860 to 1863, led to the discovery of the source of the Nile River at Lake Victoria.
