Jozef Tiso was a Roman Catholic priest, who also served as the first President of Slovakia from 1939 to 1945. He was a Slovak nationalist and Catholic conservative, who was a member of the Hlinka Slovak People's Party. Tiso was responsible for the deportation of Slovak Jews to Nazi Germany, and was found guilty of war crimes at the Nuremberg trials.
