Juan Ponce de León, a Spanish explorer, explored Puerto Rico in 1508. He was the first European to set foot on the island. He claimed it for Spain and named it San Juan Bautista. Ponce de León later returned to Puerto Rico in 1513, where he founded the first Spanish settlement on the island.
