Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo explored California in 1542, becoming the first European to do so. He landed at Point Reyes on the coast of what is now Marin County, California, and sailed south along the coast as far as San Diego Bay. He was not able to find a suitable harbor, and eventually turned back north. However, his explorations helped to open up the region to European settlement.
