Julian succeeded his cousin, Constantius II as the sole Roman Emperor following Constantius' death from illness in 361 AD. Julian, who was a close relative and a trusted general of Constantius, was elevated to the position of Caesar (junior emperor) by Constantius himself in 355 AD.
