Princess Miriam Likelike, the mother of Kaʻiulani, was the daughter of High Chief Pauli Kaʻohele and Princess Consort Laura Kōnia of Kohala. She became the Crown Princess after the death of her older brother, Prince Leleiōhoku. In 1870, she married Kaʻiulani's father, the Scotsman Archibald Scott Cleghorn, and they went on to have Kaʻiulani in 1875.
