In order to improve their country and culture, King Kalākaua encouraged Hawaiians to broaden their education beyond their nation. He established a college to help them learn about the outside world and encouraged them to travel abroad and see other cultures. This helped to open up the Hawaiians' minds and helped them to see that there was more to life than just their island.
