Kalākaua was the last king of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi and is often referred to as the "Merrie Monarch" because of his love of music and dancing. Kalākaua was a talented musician and enjoyed playing the ukulele. He is credited with popularizing the instrument in the United States and Europe.
