Kalākaua was born in Honolulu, the capital of the Hawaiian Islands. He was the last reigning king of Hawaii, and ruled from 1874 to 1893. He was a popular and charismatic leader, and is remembered for his efforts to modernize and westernize the Hawaiian Islands. However, he also faced opposition from some members of the Hawaiian aristocracy, and was eventually overthrown in a coup d'etat in 1893.
