Danish author Karl Gjellerup was born in Aarhus, Denmark on August 2, 1857. He was the youngest of five children. His father was a doctor and his mother was a teacher. When Gjellerup was three years old, his mother died. He was very close to his mother and her death had a profound impact on his life. He later wrote about his mother in his novel "Migræne" (1897).
