Khaleda Zia became the leader of the BNP in 1984, following the death of her husband Ziaur Rahman, the first president of Bangladesh. She has served as prime minister of Bangladesh three times, from 1991 to 1996, 2001 to 2006, and 2006 to 2008. She is the leader of the opposition in the current parliament.
