Constantine V, who was also called Copronymos, was the Byzantine emperor from 741 to 775. He was a successful military commander, but his reign was also marked by religious persecution. He was given the unflattering title, "the Dung-Named", because he was said to have defecated on the altar of the Hagia Sophia.
