Willy Brandt served as chancellor of West Germany from 1969 to 1974. He was the first Social Democratic chancellor of West Germany, and his government was known for its Ostpolitik, or policy of détente with the Soviet Union and East Germany. Brandt resigned in 1974 after a spy scandal, and was succeeded by Helmut Schmidt.
