The Anschluss, the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in March 1938, marked the end of Kurt Schuschnigg's chancellorship. Schuschnigg, a conservative who had been appointed Chancellor of Austria in 1934, had attempted to maintain Austrian independence in the face of growing German pressure. However, his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and he was forced to resign on March 11, 1938, after German troops crossed the Austrian border.
