Larry Brown began his coaching career with the Carolina Cougars of the American Basketball Association (ABA). He led the Cougars to the 1972 ABA Finals, where they lost to the New York Nets. After the 1972–73 season, the Cougars folded and Brown moved on to coach the Denver Nuggets of the NBA.
