Born on 27th November 1939, Laurent-Désiré Kabila was a Congolese revolutionary and politician who served as the third President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1997 until his assassination in 2001. A long-time opponent of Mobutu Sese Seko, Kabila led the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire (AFDL) in the First Congo War, which successfully toppled Mobutu's regime and installed Kabila as president.
