Lavrentiy Beria was the chief of the Soviet security agency, the NKVD, during the Second World War. He was responsible for organizing the defense of the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany and for carrying out mass executions of Soviet citizens suspected of being traitors. After the war, Beria was appointed deputy premier and minister of internal affairs, but he was removed from power in 1953 and executed the following year.
