Ngô Đình Diệm was the president of South Vietnam from 1954 to 1963. He was a Catholic and a staunch anti-communist. He was assassinated by a group of South Vietnamese military officers in 1963. Tung served as a soldier in the South Vietnamese army during the time of Diệm's presidency.
