Lothair I began his co-ruling as an emperor in 817. He was the son of Emperor Louis the Pious and Empress Judith. Lothair was crowned emperor by Pope Stephen IV in Rome on 12 February 817. He ruled jointly with his father until Louis' death in 840. Lothair then ruled alone until his death in 855.
