Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was the father of Louis the Pious. Charlemagne was the first Holy Roman Emperor and ruled over a vast empire that included much of Western and Central Europe. He was a skilled military leader and a patron of the arts and education. Louis the Pious succeeded his father as Holy Roman Emperor in 814 and ruled until his death in 840.
