Answer
Luc Montagnier, a French virologist, won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2008 for his discovery of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. He worked with Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, a French virologist, and others to make this discovery. They published their findings in the journal Science in 1983. Montagnier and Barré-Sinoussi's work led to the development of tests to detect HIV and treatments to slow the progression of AIDS.
