Lucius III was elected Pope in 1181. He was born as Ubaldo Allucingoli in 1118 in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy. He was a Dominican friar, and served as the Archbishop of Ravenna from 1176 until his election to the papacy. He was a strong advocate of reform within the Church, and worked to strengthen the authority of the papacy over the secular rulers of Europe. He died in 1185.
