Clement III was Pope from 1187 to 1191, succeeding Pope Lucius III and preceding Pope Celestine III. He was a member of the Cistercian order, and was elected pope at Viterbo on December 19, 1187. Clement was a supporter of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, and his reign was marked by conflict with the Guelphs. He died in 1191, and was succeeded by Celestine III.
