The resignation of Fraser from cabinet in 1971 resulted in the replacement of John Gorton with William McMahon. Fraser had been a vocal critic of Gorton's leadership, and his resignation led to a leadership challenge which Gorton lost. McMahon was elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party and became Prime Minister.
