Marco Pantani preferred cycling off-the-saddle because it gave him a better aerodynamic advantage. When a cyclist is seated in the saddle, they are creating a lot of drag, which slows them down. When a cyclist is off-the-saddle, they are able to use their legs to power their bike and their arms to pull themselves forward, which creates less drag and allows them to go faster.
