Maria Kalesnikava was a key figure in the opposition to Alexander Lukashenko, who has been president of Belarus since 1994. Kalesnikava was a leading member of the opposition movement's Coordination Council, which was established after Lukashenko's reelection in August 2020. She was arrested in September 2020 and sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of treason.
