Mário Soares was born on 7 December 1924. He was a Portuguese politician who served as President of Portugal from 1986 to 1996. He was also Prime Minister of Portugal from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1985. Soares was a member of the Socialist Party and a strong advocate of democracy and human rights.
