Jorge Sampaio succeeded Mário Soares as President of Portugal in 1996. He served two terms as President, from 1996 to 2006. Sampaio was a member of the Socialist Party and was a strong advocate for human rights and social justice. He was also a strong supporter of the European Union and played a key role in Portugal's accession to the EU in 1986.
