In 1983, Oliphant and others established the Australian Democrats, which was initially based on the principles of the US Democratic Party, but the Democrats became more of a left-wing party over time. Oliphant was elected to the Australian Senate in 1986 and served for 20 years. In 2006, he resigned from the Senate after he was diagnosed with brain cancer. Oliphant died in 2007.
