In 1980, Mary Landrieu was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. She was the first woman elected to the state legislature since the late 19th century. She served in the House from 1980 to 1988, and during that time she rose to become the majority whip. In 1988, she was elected to the United States Senate, where she has served ever since.
