Kranjčar ended his playing career in 1990, having spent the majority of it with Dinamo Zagreb, where he won numerous domestic titles and became a club legend. He also had brief spells in Austria with Rapid Wien and First Vienna, as well as a season with St. Pauli in Germany. Despite his success at club level, Kranjčar never managed to establish himself as a regular for the Yugoslav national team.
