Thomas J. Sargent was born on July 19, 1943. He is an American economist who is currently a professor of economics at New York University. Sargent is known for his work on macroeconomic theory, particularly on rational expectations and time series econometrics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2011, jointly with Christopher A. Sims, for their empirical research on cause and effect in the macroeconomy.
