Almunia retired from professional football in June 2013 on medical advice, after a number of years of injury problems. He was suffering from chronic knee pain, and had undergone surgery on both knees in 2012. He had also been struggling with a groin injury. Almunia said that he had been thinking about retirement for some time, and that he felt it was the right time to end his career.
