Robert Latham Owen was the first Cherokee Nation citizen to be elected to the United States Senate. He was elected in 1907 and served until 1925. Owen was a progressive Democrat and supported the New Deal. He also played a key role in the passage of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, which granted citizenship to all Native Americans born in the United States.
