In 2014, Mikel Arteta became the captain of Arsenal after the departure of Thomas Vermaelen. He had previously been vice-captain to Vermaelen and had captained the club on a number of occasions in the absence of the Belgian. Arteta went on to lead Arsenal to FA Cup victory in 2014-15, his first season as captain.
