Mirek Topolánek became the leader of the Civic Democratic Party in 2002. He was elected after the resignation of Václav Klaus, who had been the party's leader since its foundation in 1991. Topolánek led the party to victory in the 2006 parliamentary elections, and served as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 2006 to 2009.
