Patty Murray was first elected to the Senate in the 1990s. She won the election in 1992, defeating the incumbent Republican Slade Gorton. Murray has been re-elected five times since then, and is currently the senior senator from Washington. She is a member of the Democratic Party and is considered to be a moderate.
