Barend Biesheuvel succeeded Piet De Jong as Prime Minister of the Netherlands in 1971. Biesheuvel was a member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) party and had previously served as Minister of Finance. He led a coalition government with the Labour Party (PvdA) and the Democratic Party of the Left (D66).
